Furthermore, by some estimates, 30-55% of all major depression lies along the bipolar spectrum. Bipolar II is characterized by hypomania and episodes of depression. Bipolar III refers to antidepressant-associated hypomania. Mixed states and dysphoric symptoms may be clinically challenging to characterize, resulting in significant diagnosis and treatment delays.

Atypical depressive symptoms, anxiety states, and comorbid illness (including substance/alcohol abuse) may further confound diagnosis and treatment. In this evidence-based psychCME TV activity, experts will discuss how to recognize the entire clinical spectrum of bipolarity in order to maximize diagnostic accuracy, treatment efficiency, and thus patient outcomes.Faculty:John Beyer, MDAssociate Clinical Professor of PsychiatryDepartment of Psychiatry and Behavioral SciencesDuke University Medical CenterDurham, NCS. The Herndon Davis Reports, http://herndondavis.com, hosted by its creator and namesake, is a one hour long, black gay/lesbian focused, empowerment news program. The nationally syndicated show aggressively tackles a variety of socioeconomic and political issues impacting the gay/lesbian community but from a distinctly black gay/lesbian affirming perspective.Broadcasting on DirecTV channel 227, the news/talk show can be seen on Sunday mornings beginning July 17, from 8am-9am and on Comcast Cable TV101 Southern California starting July 18, 7-8am.

Is chronic pain making life difficult for you? Well have you tried the alternative medical form of treatment, acupuncture? Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese healing method that can heal people suffering from different types of clinical and medical conditions including different kinds of chronic pain. The treatment process of acupuncture involves the piercing of needles in particular trigger points through the skin to your body. Acupuncture in NYC is provided my many acupuncture practitioners who are certified acupuncture practitioners. All you need to do for getting relief from your condition is to find a good practitioner who will treat you.

Earlier acupuncture was widely practiced in china as a form of treatment for treating different conditions.

However with the passage of time this form of treatment is increasingly being adopted by western medical practitioners as a treatment method. Many studies and research has been done on this method of treatment and it has been found to be effective for treating different health conditions. The World Health Organization or WHO has recognized acupuncture as an effective method of treatment for successfully treating more than 40 health conditions.

If you are suffering from any health condition or pain of any kind, do not put off consulting an acupuncture specialist and seeking treatment for the condition. What most of us do is try to grin and bear whatever discomfort we experience in the hope that everything will become fine soon.

But this is often not the case. Any delay in seeking medical treatment of any kind including acupuncture can make the condition worse and difficult to cure.

The term acupuncture when translated means ?piercing with needles'. The treatment process involves identifying the trigger points in the body. This is not an easy task and only specialists will be able to identity the points in your body.

After identifying these points needles are inserted to your body through the skin. While undergoing the procedure you may experience a slight pricking sensation, but this is just temporary.

The theory behind acupuncture treatment is that two contrastingly different and varied forces are present in the human body. For a person to have the perfect health, it is important to have a proper balance between these two forces. The two varied forces are Yin that is the feminine, cold and the passive force and Yang that is the masculine, hot and the active force. Any disturbance in the balance between these two forces can lead to disturbance in the health of a person.

If any disturbance in balance exists acupuncture aims to correct the condition by restoring back the balance in the body.

It is very important to seek acupuncture treatment for a specialist. There are many certified acupuncture specialists practicing in NYC, and all you have to do is find out who will perform the procedure on your perfectly. Acupuncture can treat different health conditions successfully. Some of the conditions that can be effectively treated are different types of pain, anxiety, mental disorders, depression, high blood pressure, menopause and some other gynecological disorders.

Acupuncture is a safe method for treating any health condition.

However if the proper trigger points are not identified in your body your condition can become worse. Always remember to get this treatment done in NYC from a registered acupuncture practitioner. You can get rid of any condition that you are facing through acupuncture. .

What if Santa showed up in September with a simple plan that would help individuals and families reduce the stress and anxiety that comes with the December Holidays? Could this type of program reduced the stress? The anxiety? Or, the depression that some people develop when the holidays arrive. Are you one of the many that stresses out, gets depressed, or worries too much during the annual November and December holidays? Maybe you wish you could spend more time enjoying the Holidays and less time rushing about? "How to get a Head Start on the Holidays," is a simple program that shows how to enjoy the Holiday Season, do everything you want, and at the same time, reduce the stress, anxiety, and the depression that often accompanies this joyous time of the year. Here are the Secrets:Secret #1 - Organize & Plan Ahead.Secret #2 - Eliminate Unnecessary Tasks.Secret #3 - Schedule Personal Time .This is done by starting a few months in advance, dividing the work and tasks associated with the holidays, and doing a little each month. It's a simple and fun form of time management. What makes this program so different? It was created by a real Santa Claus. As a professional Santa, for over 35 years, Santa Tim Connaghan has been a public speaker offering programs on 'The History of Santa Claus,' and 'The Symbols of Christmas.' After many years of also answering questions on other subjects related to the Holidays, He began giving suggestions and advice. This lead to the creation of "How to Get a Head Start on the Holidays."Santa Tim's goal is to spread this message across America and help people everywhere. For the past few years, he has done this through live presentations. Some groups and organizations asked for copies.

So this past year he put pen to paper and produced the presentation as a full news article and as a one page flyer that could easily be reproduced and sent out. A few clubs have included the one page in their electronic newsletter to members. He also created a web site where interested individuals or families can visit and select a four, five or six month plan that will aid them in 'getting a head start.' The web address is http://www.getaheadstart.info Full copies of his articles and the plans are available on the web site.If you are interested in "Getting a Head Start," visit the web site. Santa Tim hopes others will study the simple program and pass the word on to others. In this way he hopes he can reach more people and hopefully make everyone's holiday season more enjoyable.

Depression hits many of us at different times during our lives. The symptoms are commonly known: being tired all the time, low self-esteem, no self-confidence, disturbed sleep, concentration impaired and no interest in life.Depression is not just a dark mood; it is an illness. Low levels of the hormone serotonin are a known contributing factor. The lower the Serotonin levels the deeper the depression. To increase the Serotonin all the building blocks need to be present.

One of the vital missing links is often the amino acid Tryptophan. So increasing Tryptophan in our diets can help ease depression. Foods that are high in Tryptophan are fish, turkey, meat and chicken, Parmesan cheese, almonds, barley, lentils and bananas. Tryptophanes first priority in the body is to make Niacin (vitamin B3), not to make Serotonin. In other words, it is vital to ensure that you are getting adequate amounts of Niacin in your diet, if you are going to increase the Serotonin levels.

Other B Vitamins are also essential. A good balance diet, which includes a variety of fish, pulses and fresh raw vegetables, is always the key. Some foods that help lift moods are:Carbohydrates in winter, if you crave these in winter, they may help lift the winter blues. Look towards eating the more complex carbohydrates such as dried beans, pasta, vegetables, cereal, whole grain bread and crackers.Spinach is high in folic acid. It has been shown that people with depression have lower levels of folic acid than normal.

Low folic acid can cause the levels of Serotonin to shrink. The amount need to fight off depression is only 200mg-500mg a day. This amount can easily be found in foods such as green leafy vegetables. 200mg is can be obtained from about three quarters of a cup of spinach.Fish is brain food. Eating seafood can improve your mood.

Seafood is extra high in the trace mineral Selenium. Those with low Selenium levels are more likely to be anxious, depressed and tired. (Australian soils are deficient in Selenium) It has been found that when those with low Selenium levels increase them, their moods improve. Most Selenium comes from grains, seafood and cereals. Brazil nuts are one of the richest sources of them all.

Eating just one a day will guarantee you are never deficient in Selenium. Garlic. Studies on garlic have shown that not only do they have other health benefits, but also the garlic eaters, generally had a greater sense of well-being. They experienced less fatigue, anxiety, sensitivity, agitation and irritability. Many lifestyle considerations need to be looked in to. Smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol can decrease the tryptophan levels, as can caffeine and sugar.

When suffering from depression it is easy to use these as a crutch and instead of decreasing your usage, it is increased. Of course this just exacerbates the situation.Exercise is a great mood lifting. Mood elevating endorphins are released during exercise. A brisk walk or jog is great way to clear the air. Other great exercises for this are cycling, racquet sports, aerobic exercise, weight lifting, etc.

As always, it is important to look at things holistically. Emotional aspect must consider. Often depression comes with an overload of energy, so releasing that energy is important. So apart from exercise already mentioned, massage is a great energy mover. Doing things that help spark your creativity can help release pent up emotional energy too.

Consider writing in a journal, or stories, poetry, whatever. Drawing pictures, they don't have to be a master pieces, just let yourself go, draw squiggles, doodle, paint picture, splurge with colour. Take a class in something like pottery, anything creative. Play a musical instrument. Sing.

It doesn't have to be in tune, just let it out; this is a great way to release emotions. Enjoy other people's creativity; go to museums, art galleries, craft show, or concerts.A great way to deal with depression is to get involved in something worthwhile. Leave your troubles behind and help someone else. In our lives today, it is so easy to become isolated from other people. This is just a breeding ground for depression.

Join a group and make some friends. Find someone to talk to about your problems. In severe cases counselling may help.If you need more than this you may want to consider supplements. Hypericum (St John's Wort) is the number 1 herb for depression. (If you are on other medication, check first that it won't interact) Tryptophan is available but on a limited basis.

A multivitamin, which is high in the B vitamins, is essential. Flower Essences are a good stand by to help you through. Essential oils can also lift the mood. (If you would like help in selecting the right combination of supplements, just contact me through my website, http://www.puttingitright.com.au and I will put together a selection for you, with a special price.)Above all, changing your outlook helps. Work on replacing your negative thoughts with positive empowering thoughts.

Take charge and live the life you want to live..

Copyright 2006 Christopher Green

Throughout your life, you have formed a set of values and meanings to make sense of the world you live in. These values and meanings constitute your beliefs and your beliefs are what you hold to be true about life. Your beliefs are at the core of your existence and you wouldn't be the person you are now without them.

Beliefs are very important. The only reason you act and behave the way you do is because of your beliefs. For example, people who believe in God will act in a way conducive with their belief ? praying or going to church for example.

If you don't believe in a God, it is very unlikely you'll pray to one.

This pattern follows in most areas of our lives and here are three very powerful beliefs that can hurt you and spoil your quality of life. They are beliefs common to stress, anxiety and depression and they underpin these illnesses. Do you hold any or all of the following beliefs:

1. I'm helpless and hopeless. I can't do anything, things are totally beyond my control and there's no point in trying to do anything about it because nothing I do ever works.

This is a very powerful and limiting belief. If you believe that you are helpless, then you will act accordingly because you won't take action to change things. Why would you if you strongly believe it is a hopeless cause? Helplessness is learned and it is also flawed. Many people are blind to the power they possess and a belief in helplessness keeps them in the dark. But just as helplessness is learned, it can be unlearned.

2.

Nobody loves me. I'm an effort to be with, I bore people and I never have anything interesting to say. It's much better if I stay alone and don't inflict myself on others and spoil their happiness. OK, it was very hard for me to write the last few lines because they're exactly what someone I loved dearly said to me on many occasions when we were due to socialize with friends. Hearing such words cuts you to ribbons, my word it is such a destructive belief.

If you believe this, you will act accordingly by isolating yourself from others. You'll find excuses so you don't have to go out and when you do, you will sit in silence and try to melt into the background. And as you won't be engaging with others, this belief will be re-enforced. Another aspect: people who believe this will put themselves down when others question them. So, someone says "you're quiet tonight, are you OK?" Will get a "well, that's me, I haven't really got anything interesting to say so I'll keep quiet and not bore anyone." Honestly, I've seen this happen many times.

Even when they've been loved, even when they've had family and friends who loved them and enjoyed their company, this belief blinded them to all of it. Can you see how the belief comes first no matter what is happening in reality? In other words, it is THE BELIEF causing the harm, not others. Not family, not friends, but the belief and if you strongly believe this, nothing will convince you otherwise until you start to question and test this belief.

3. Finally, perhaps the most limiting belief of all. Be honest with me here when I ask: Do you believe it is wrong to be blissfully happy? The obvious immediate reaction is "yes, of course!".

But stop for a second because this is important. Very few people truly believe this. They see others struggle in life and believe that it is wrong to be happy while others suffer. Feeling happy makes them feel guilty. Also, you may hold a deep-seated belief that there has to be suffering in life, that somehow, suffering brings enlightenment.

If you are happy, then you're selfish and this is wrong because the happiness of others comes before yours and you must sacrifice your happiness for the greater good. But you have a right enjoy a happy life. There is no value in suffering and there is nothing to feel guilty about in being happy. Believing otherwise will mean you will act in a way that spoils happiness and continually robs it from you.

Please examine the beliefs you hold. Question their validity and if they're making you stressed, anxious or depressed, then please understand they can be unlearned and replaced with better ones.

Until next time.

Obesity is not merely indulging into overeating and having a bulky body. It is more like a gateway to severe health diseases. Obese people should not be ridiculed; rather they should be taken care off. Obesity is calculated according to the body mass index (BMI) of a person's body. Dividing the weight of a person in pounds by the square of his height in meters we get the BMI calculated.

If an individual's BMI is 30 or above then he falls under the category of an obese.

Obese people develop certain diseases such as high cholesterol, hypertension, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis etc. Besides having these health problems, they find it difficult to adjust themselves in the society. They develop stress and can even fall into depression. Hence, obesity is such an alarming condition that if ignore can lead to grave consequences.

Earlier, joining a fitness centre was the only solution to reduce weight. But today the scenario has changed.

Medical science has come up with various weight reducing drugs in the market. Didrex can be an appropriate medication for you if you want to reduce weight in short span of time.

Despite the national media attention on breast augmentation and breast implants, a different trend can be seen at plastic surgeons' offices all over the nation: an increase in the number of women receiving breast reductions. Over 113,000 women will elect to have their breasts made smaller this year, an increase of 11% from previous years. While many people may find this information surprising, in truth, overly large breasts can cause serious physical pain. The weight of pendulous breasts causes structural demands on the neck and back that can create chronic pain. Depression and self-consciousness to the point of lowered self-esteem are also commonly documented."Many people don't understand the daily pain endured by women with overly large breasts," said Dr.

Grant Stevens. "Chronic neck, should, and back pain is typical. Headaches are common. Often these women can't participate in high-impact activities like running or most sports." The physical problems are severe enough that insurance companies will often cover breast reductions, though it does depend on each patient's physical situation. In addition, the FDA called breast reductions "good medicine."Breast reductions can also equate to easier mammograms.

For women with excessive breast tissue, getting a good mammogram reading can be difficult. By reducing the size of the breasts and eliminating some excessive breast tissue, doctors can more clearly get and read mammogram results, helping to save more women's lives. "Overly large breasts affect more than just the physical," said Dr. Stevens. "They can cause a self-consciousness than can morph into depression and create a lack of self-esteem." Often these women have been subjected to unwanted comments and attention that has increased their self-consciousness.

Many spend an inordinate amount of time finding clothing that hides their bodies or searching for bras that don't create deep ridges in their shoulders from the extra weight of their heavy breasts. The simple positive effect of eliminating chronic pain can be reason enough for most women to choose to have a breast reduction. Most are happy to discover that the benefits are not only about what has been decreased: pain, headaches, breast pain, and grooves on the shoulders from bra straps working over time. Many are happy to discover the things they gain as well: more self-esteem, more self-confidence and more activities in which to participate. In fact, women who have breast reductions report some of the highest satisfaction rates amongst all plastic surgery procedures.

Los Angeles, CA (ContentDesk) March 27, 2006 -- Byron Katie, internationally recognized speaker and best-selling author of Loving What Is: Four Questions that Can Change Your Life and I Need Your Love - Is That True? is the creator of a simple, powerful, and practical method of self-inquiry and transformation known as "The Work," which she has introduced to hundreds of thousands of people at lectures and workshops in more than 30 countries. Consistent with leading-edge research in cognitive psychology, The Work has been compared to the Socratic dialogue, Buddhist teachings, and 12-step programs, although Katie developed it without any knowledge of religion or psychology. The Work emerged directly out of Katie's own intense experiences with suffering. After more than a decade of struggling with severe depression, Katie experienced a profound and life-changing realization. She saw that when she believed that something should be different than it is ("My husband should love me more," "My children should appreciate me," "I should have more money,") she suffered, and that when she didn't believe these thoughts, she felt peace. She realized that what had been causing her depression was not the world around her, but the beliefs she had about the world around her.In a sudden flash of insight, Katie awoke from her suffering and saw that her previous attempts to find happiness had been backward, and that instead of hopelessly trying to change the world to match her thoughts about how it should be, she could question these thoughts and, by meeting reality as it is, experience unimaginable freedom and joy.

As a result, a bed-ridden, suicidal woman became filled with love for everything life brings.Time magazine has profiled Katie, calling her "a visionary for the new millennium." In March 2002, Harmony Books published Katie's first book, Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life, co-written with renowned author/translator Stephen Mitchell. Loving What Is has been translated into 20 languages. It reached as high as #21 on Amazon.com. It has also been on best-seller lists at bookstores around the country. Katie's second book, I Need Your Love, Is That True?, was also a bestseller and is fast becoming one of the most popular books on relationships ever written.

Katie travels throughout the world teaching people how to live happier lives by questioning their stressful thoughts using The Work in weekend workshops, evening events and as a keynote speaker at some of the most prestigious spiritual and inspirational conferences with internationally renowned speakers such as Dr. Wayne Dyer. Since 1998, Katie has directed The School for The Work, a nine-day curriculum of powerful exercises offered several times a year in different locations around the world. She also presents The Work to corporations and nonprofit organizations throughout the U.S. The Work applies to people of all walks of life and is currently being used by coaches, therapists, social workers, healing practitioners, and others who work in the mental health field as well as people who work in business, education and church communities.

For more information about The Work of Byron Katie and to register for the workshop, visit www.the work.com..
