Yitzhak Jacobowits, a mountain Jew, reputedly the strongest man in Krusta, an ideal manager for Count Polony's flour mill, marries Rifke, a mountain girl who was his childhood sweetheart. He prospers and makes friends across all social divides.
But times change. War is followed by defeat and depression. The fast moving narrative, full of warmth and humor, traces the growth of prejudice on two continents, from "polite" sneers, to open insults, violent attacks and the orchestrated tragedy of the Holocaust.
